-
The collection tube should only contain one swab when sent to the lab.
GENITAL & VAGINAL SWAB COLLECTION
Step 1: Remove tube and swab applicator. Apply patient label on tube.
For Genital Ulcer
Step 2a: Swab inside active or open genital ulcer for 5 to 10 seconds. Continue to Step 3.
For Vaginal Swab
Step 2b: Insert the swab about 2 inches into the vaginal opening. Gently turn the swab for about 20 to 30 seconds while touching the swab against the wall of the vagina.
Step 3: While holding the swab, unscrew the tube cap. Don’t spill the medium! Place the swab flocked tip side down into the tube.
Step 4: Lean the swab shaft for the breakpoint mark to rest against the rim of the tube. Bend the swab shaft at 180 degrees angle to break it off at the breakpoint mark.
Step 5: Ensure the swab tip remains in the medium. Replace the tube cap and secure tightly. Place specimen tube inside biohazard bag and seal.
