Collection Instructions for Respiratory Pathogen PCR Testing

PREPARATION

Complete requisition form. Make copies (both sides) of patient license & insurance card.

Print out patient label or fill out patient label provided in kit. Name on patient label should match requisition form. Circle oropharyngeal (OP) or nasopharyngeal (NP) for sample type.

Wash hands, then dry. Put gloves on.

PATIENT LABEL

SPECIMEN COLLECTION: NASOPHARYNGEAL (NP) SWAB



Step 2: Tilt patient’s head back 70 degrees. Gently and slowly insert the swab through the nostril parallel to the palate until resistance is encountered.
Step 3: Gently rub and roll the swab. Leave swab in place for several seconds to absorb secretions.


STEPS 4, 5, 6
*SAME FOR NP & OP COLLECTION
Step 4: While holding the swab, unscrew the tube cap. Don’t spill the medium! Place the swab flocked tip side down into the tube.

​Step 5: Lean the swab shaft for the breakpoint mark to rest against the rim of the tube. Bend the swab shaft at 180 degrees angle to break it off at the breakpoint mark.

Step 6: Ensure the swab tip remains in the medium. Replace the tube cap and secure tightly. Place specimen into biohazard bag and seal.

Step 1: Remove tube and swab applicator. Apply patient label on tube.
For oropharyngeal swab collection: Replace steps 1 through 3 with instructions below.
SPECIMEN COLLECTION: OROPHARYNGEAL (OP) SWAB
Step 1: Remove tube and swab applicator. Apply patient label on tube.
Step 2: Patient tilts head back and opens mouth wide. Hold tongue down with tongue depressor and have patient say “aahh” to elevate the uvula.
Step 3: Vigorously swab both of the tonsils and then swab the posterior pharynx in a “figure 8” movement.

Place the specimen tube inside biohazard bag & seal bag.

Place requisition form & patient forms in pocket on outside of biohazard bag.

Place biohazard bag inside pre-paid return mailer & seal.
04
Schedule pick up from shipping provider or drop off at a local dropbox. Ship same day for faster results.
